Last year, banks opened 2023 by forecasting layoffs, including for the investment bankers who suddenly had nothing to do following the pandemic-era M&A and IPO boom. Citigroup kicked off 2024 ominously, warning that it will lay off as many as 20,000 employees by 2026. The bank expects 2024 expenses to increase further to total $90 billion, up $2.8 billion from 2023, and much of that will be focused on hiring. CFO Barnum on Friday said the bank is gearing up for a "rebound in the investment banking wallet." Headcount declined 3% to 80,006 from 82,427, while compensation expenses rose to $24.5 billion from $23 billion.

A 2015 law requires rental car companies with 35 or more vehicles to complete recall repairs before renting vehicles. The agency is requiring Zipcar, a unit of Avis Budget Group (CAR.O) since 2013, to submit an audit report of all Zipcar vehicles with uncompleted recall repairs at any time within 150 calendar days after the effective date of the settlement. On Monday, Zipcar said the settlement stems from a 2017 recall in which less than 50 of 12,000 vehicles of its global fleet were found in violation. Zipcar added the recall "was a unique mileage-based recall that did not require the immediate grounding of the vehicles" and added the vehicles are no longer in its fleet. "Vehicles with open, unrepaired recalls pose a safety risk to everyone on the road," said Ann Carlson, NHTSA's acting administrator.

Amgen, which has gained Horizon's two key products Tepezza and Krystexxa, said it will provide an updated annual forecast during its third-quarter earnings call. RBC Capital Markets analyst Gregory Renza expects Amgen's updated forecast to weave in revenue from Horizon's drugs, which could partially offset the company's "maturing product line". Tepezza could be a "core driver" for Amgen, Renza said, adding that the drug can bring in $3.9 billion in peak sales. Direxion rolls out Nvidia-focused ETFs for bulls and bears

The Direxion Daily NVDA Bull 1.5x Shares ETF (NVDU.O) seeks to deliver 1.5 times the price return of daily moves in Nvidia’s shares, which have more than tripled year-to-date. Meanwhile, the Direxion Daily NVDD Bear 1x Shares ETF allows bearish investors to profit when Nvidia’s shares decline. Single-stock ETFs made their debut in 2022, but only a handful of products have since been introduced by five firms, including Direxion. Because of their increased exposure, investors’ losses in leveraged exchange traded products can be staggering, analysts said. Only four leveraged single-stock ETFs currently have more than $50 million, according to Morningstar.

An Amgen sign is seen at the company's office in South San Francisco, California October 21, 2013. With Horizon, Amgen acquires drugs that won't be affected by new U.S. negotiation requirements for blockbuster medications as well as possible tax advantages stemming from Horizon's headquarters in Ireland. Analysts said the Horizon deal could also help Amgen's tax situation. The United States has largely eliminated once-lucrative corporate tax benefits for pharmaceutical manufacturing operations in Puerto Rico, a U.S. territory. Horizon offers Amgen "potentially a better tax jurisdiction related to Irish manufacturing plants ... Amgen has a new manufacturing process they could potentially move there," Cowen's Werber said.

The highest U.S. interest rates in over 20 years coupled with Wall Street's remarkable resilience has brought an old boardroom dilemma into sharp focus: are share buybacks worth it? Ditto Apple, Chevron, Alphabet and Wells Fargo, which this year have announced buybacks of $90 billion, $75 billion, $70 billion and $30 billion, respectively. Yet many funds hold less of the stock in their portfolios compared with Nvidia's weight in key equity indexes, making it tougher for them to beat their benchmarks. Among those funds that held a below-average weight in Nvidia, 85% underperformed the index so far this year, Morningstar's data showed. Nvidia's valuation has been a primary reason keeping some investors away, while others are wary of buying in after the stock’s mammoth 230% run this year. Nvidia launches new AI chip configuration

REUTERS/Robert Galbraith/File PhotoAug 8 (Reuters) - Nvidia (NVDA.O) announced a new configuration on Tuesday for its advanced artificial intelligence chips that is designed to speed generative AI applications. The configuration is optimized to perform AI inference functions that effectively power generative AI applications such as ChatGPT. Nvidia's Grace Hopper Superchip design stitches together one of the company's H100 graphics processing units (GPU) with an Nvidia-designed central processor. The underlying AI models that power the generative AI apps that are capable of producing human-like text and images continue to grow in size. Nvidia plans to sell two flavors: a version that includes two chips that customers can integrate into systems, and a complete server system that combines two Grace Hopper designs.
